Microsoft to drop Xbox 360 price just in time for PS3 launch.

So, word on the web is that Bill Gates and the boys are gonna chop $100 off the price of the Xbox 360 by the holiday season, which should coincide with the PS3 launch. That will put the 360 at around $300, or roughly half of the cost of the PS3.
With the PS3 set to launch with a $600 price tag, a next generation gaming machine at half the price will look even more appealing to buyers. The high cost of the PS3 is tied to its Blu-ray high def DVD player. When you consider that the drive doesn't give any benefit to the PS3 as a gaming device, only allowing owners to watch high-definition Blu-ray movies (Sony’s proprietary standard as it launches into the high def DVD wars) that choice is looking more like a bad decision everyday. Considering only a small percentage of the population is set up to view and enjoy HD video content, the ongoing concern over what will be the next DVD standard (HD DVD versus Blu-ray) and the high cost of the PS3, consumers will think twice about spending big bucks on a gaming console. With similar game play capable on the cheaper Xbox 360 and the cheaper still Nintendo Wii, its not looking good for Sony.

I was stoked about the PS3 and had no doubts that I would buy one, but after reading all your posts, I am leaning more towards the 360 now. My main issues isnt so much the price, as I feel its not that bad since it does have the Blu Ray, but the whole not owning the games that you wrote about before really pisses me off. Now with the price drop of the 360, I think I may end up joining the 360 club.

I would love to get an Xbox 360, but the fact is that i dont have the money to buy that AND a PS3. And i REALLY want a PS3. My PS2 games wont go to waste and the Blu-ray player coming with it is a steal. Need i mention MGS4, or UT2K7? How about GT5 with online mode (and possibly damage modelling). GT4 Online is currently in the beta stage, and im assuming its all for GT5. F1 2006 is on its way and NHL 2K7 as well. There are a roughly 10 games already that i cant wait to own.

Anyway, i really want to play the Battle for Middle-Earth 2, though i wish it were coming to the PS3...

Sadly, the HD-DVD drive will be an add-on released later this year, and it will ONLY play movies...

Smooth move by Micro$oft. But I am still going towards that Wii and its magical wand.

There won't be a price drop. One of Microsoft's latest announcements, via group manager of PR and communications John Porcaro, claims, "The official word from folks in the know is that there are currently no plans for a price drop this fall." This statement was featured in a post on Porcaro's Gamerscore: Bloghttp://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2006/06/23/535883.aspx
